Nature and insects

Let’s talk about nature in The Gambia. The Gambia is a beautiful African country that has been discovered more and more by tourists lately. The Gambia has seven national parks and nature reserves, one community wildlife reserve, 66 forest parks and one Ramsar site. In total, they represent about 35% of the country’s total land area which is roughly 38.000 ha. A lot of nature lovers and bird lovers visit The Gambia. However, as a photographer, visiting one of these parks could give you amazing photos of birds and other animal species.


One of the national parks is called Bijilo Forest Park, and this park is rich in birdlife and offers excellent opportunities for bird watching in The Gambia. Over 133 bird species have been recorded here with various hornbills, pheasants, cuckoos, sunbirds and so on. When you are surrounded by nature, there is a significant change you will see a lot of insects as well. So what kind of insects can you find in The Gambia?


It seems that the end of the rainy season is a great time to see lots of different creatures. There are spiders in all sizes in The Gambia, ranging from jumping spiders that are generally not too big, to large hairy ones. Good to know is that the spiders in The Gambia are not dangerous. Also, something you would notice is the beautiful butterflies. There are many different butterfly species, and you will see a lot of them. Because of the hot temperature in The Gambia, you will definitely see some cockroaches. Not to forget there are a bunch of mosquitos, so keep that in mind when visiting The Gambia.
