Hotspots in The Gambia

Gambia is with its colourful markets, beautiful nature, beautiful beaches and happy waving children a must visit when you go to Africa.


Tanji is a fisherman’s village in The Gambia. Every day in the afternoon hundreds of beautifully painted fishers boats arrive at the beach of Tanji with their caught fish of the day. Women and children are then ready to clean, dry, smoke and then freeze the fish. You can walk along the beach o get the best view of this whole scenery. You should bet here at 3 to see the highpoint.


Wide Open Walls is a big art project. The, before grey walls, of houses, shops, schools and barns are painted into beautiful art pieces with all the colours of the rainbows. You can even find the graffiti artwork of a world-famous artist, ROA. You can find these beautiful wall paintings in the Village Kubuneh. This village is not in centre of The Gambia and the paths are not bituminized.

The most famous market of The Gambia is Serrekunda Market. It is like a maze with small alleys and thousands of market stands. It is very famous under the locals because you can literally buy and sell everything here. It is also much less touristic than you would expect. A must see!


Gambia has beautiful beaches with very nice beach bars where you can easily spend a day of your vacation. Rain Beach bar on paradise beach, also known as Sanyang beach, is according to many the most beautiful beach of the Gambia. You can think of coloured huts, palm trees, fresh juice and lovely meals. A true paradise!


If you are looking for souvenirs you should definitely visit one of the local craft markets. You can find lots of wood carved products for a cheap price. You an also find djembe’s, masks, jewellery, fabrics, bags and paintings. There is a small craft market at the beginning of the Senegambia strip in Kololi but the most well known craft market is Kotu Craft Market. Keep in mind, bargaining is a must.


The Gambia river goes trough the middle of entire Gambia so especially when you go into the midland you will definitely see it. You can on a tour per boat to enjoy this piece of nature. The river is surrounded my mangrove bushes. The river is also much beloved by birds because the river is rich of fish. You can spot various bird species and if you are lucky, you can even spot dolphins. A visit to Lamin Lodge is also worth hit. It was once an oyster farm, but nowadays it is a restaurant where you can do lots of activities.

The most touristic are in The Gambia is the Senegambia Strip in Kololi. The strip is worth a visit, especially at night. You can find good restaurants and you will be entertained by an African drumband.


Cape Point/Bakau is also a must visit. The highlight here is the Kachikally Crocodile Pool. A big pool full of crocodiles where unfertile women wash themselves in the hope to become fertile. This is an old ritual so it is unsure if the women still come there.


The Abuko Nature Reserve is the biggest nature park in The Gambia. You can find various animals here. You can feed monkeys, see hyena’s and big birds during a bird show.


A trip to the capital city Banjul is also a must. You can go to the big mosk here and the Royal Albert market.
